Power BI writeback, explained

Power BI writeback, without leaving your report.

Power BI is read-only by design. accoTOOL layers two-way data entry, planning grids and commenting directly onto your existing model, no separate app, no data exports.

Why native Power BI can't do this

Power BI reports connect to a semantic model to display data, they don't write to it. Any input needs a separate app, a SharePoint list, or an Excel round-trip, breaking the single source of truth and adding a manual step to every plan, forecast or data fix.

What accoTOOL adds

accoTOOL is a Power BI visual, Approved on AppSource, that adds an editable grid and comment layer directly on the report canvas. Entries write straight back to your SQL Server or Fabric database, the same model everyone already reports from.

How it works

Four steps to a live writeback report

STEP 1

Connect

Point accoTOOL at your existing semantic model, no new database or pipeline.

STEP 2

Design the grid

Pick the dimensions and measures users should be able to edit or comment on.

STEP 3

Set write rules

Row-level permissions, approval flags and validation, configured, not coded.

STEP 4

Publish

Entries write back live, everyone downstream sees the same updated model.

Where writeback matters

Three products, one writeback layer

FAQ

Power BI writeback questions

Can Power BI write back to a database natively?

No. Power BI's semantic model and reports are read-only by design; there's no built-in mechanism to capture user input and persist it back to the source. Writeback requires an add-on like accoTOOL.

What's the difference between writeback and a data-entry form?

A separate form writes to its own table, disconnected from your report. accoTOOL's writeback happens inside the report canvas itself, against the same model, so what a user enters is immediately part of the data everyone else sees.

Does accoTOOL work with Power BI Desktop and Service?

Yes. accoTOOL is a Power BI visual, it works the same in Desktop, the Power BI Service, and embedded reports.

Is accoTOOL Approved on AppSource?

Yes, accoTOOL is Approved on AppSource and installs like any other Power BI visual, no separate infrastructure to stand up.
